Environmental Health Home Assessment

The environmental health risk that caught my eye the most while filling out this assessment was the "use of strong smelling cleaners" piece. A lot of the fragrances I have  in my home are not things I had seriously considered as potential environmental health risks. A lot of the fragrances in my home are not things that I have regulated in the past either. I let various cleaning products and air fresheners enter my home without thinking of the potential danger. I feel a bit ashamed about my continued use of things that I know to be "not good for me" (I'm thinking of toxic cleaners in particular) but I am looking forward to learning more about them in the near future. I think (and I hope) that education will be the thing that finally pushes me to eliminate certain cleaning products from my home once and for all!

  1. Hi Alex,
I too did not realize ho many fragrances I have in my home that could be potential environmental exposures. Not only do "non-natural" cleaners smell better, but they are often less expensive. Do you think moving forward, the price of natural cleaners will pale in comparison to the potential environmental exposures you might get from a cheaper, higher risk cleaner? - Christina K-H

  2. Hey Alex,
I love air fresheners as well! I mean who doesn't want their home or room to smell good? After doing this assessment, I began to question some of my cleaning products and will be more aware from here on out. This class is really opening our eyes to a lot of things that I'm sure not many of us considered. I look forward to learning more with the rest of the class. Thx for sharing!

Wow! Props to your family for being so emergency prepared! I know my family and I have talked about what the steps for us to take in an emergency, but we are not as prepared as your family. I was also interested to read about the gas appliances in your home. I should take another look around my own home and seek these appliances out as well as the fragrances I mentioned in my blog above.

Do you have an attached garage to your home? You mentioned that this exposure caught your eye, does it apply to your family home? My family used to have an attached garage, but a remodel got rid of this possible exposure for us. I also had to ask my parents about a great deal of the exposure possibilities to gain more information; its wild to think about some of these! Like an attached garage - I NEVER would have given this much thought as a possible risk before this class.
