The Zero Waste Life
I thought this Module was very interesting. I've actually seen two of these videos before through my own general surfing of the internet - one of which is the Ted Talk with the young woman living a Zero Waste life. Looking around at my own home, I think the biggest waste stream contributor that I would like to see diminished is the use of my boyfriend and I's personal care products. These items are always packaged in plastic and we go through a LOT of them. Everything from deodorant, to makeup, to toothpaste, to hair gel. I think it would be worth our while to learn how to make a few of these things on our own so that we didn't need to rely so heavily on the packaged products. Toothpaste and soap are the two things that come to mind as being particularly easy to make as I've seen recipes for these things, made them on my own as gifts in the past, and I know that we go through them very quickly. I think that by making an effort to replace even just these two items as a start, I could lessen the waste being generated by my household a good deal.

Hi Alex,
ReplyDeleteI too found these videos quite intriguing! Great idea to start reducing your usage of personal care products! The packaging these days seems quite excessive in my opinion.
I actually have a friend who makes her own soaps and scrubs. In the beginning, I was only purchasing them from her to support her small business. But now that I know about all of the chemicals that personal products contain, I will continue buying from her. I like your idea of making your own! I should start doing that as well. We should start with the easy stuff first to get the hang of it and then if we become good at it, we can sale our products on Etsy! Lol

ReplyDeleteArghhh! Bubbly water! I can relate to your problem with this! I'm currently sipping bubbly water as I write my response so I feel so much like I've been 'caught red handed'! I also found the video the be ery inspiring, it really makes you want to walk away chancing at least one thing to decrease your trash output.

Really good idea about reusing the plastic bags in your home! This is something I do regularly and I heartily recommend it. The only problem comes sometime when I have to reuse one that held food that was wet.. then you have to wash and dry them with soap which can be a little time consuming.
